Sep 25-How did this conversation make you think about fairness and opportunity in society today? If you were in Troy’s position, what would you do?

Response- Troy is valid for thinking the way he did with the job system in society, however I think you should also have a mindset to break the norm. For example Cory wanted to get into football but troy was against it. He believed Cory would have no success pursuing football as a career because of how the system is set up, In a way I think he was holding Cory back by discouraging him and not signing him up to get the scholarship. It's good to think realistically but not having hope at all is to set you up for failure. Summary- In class we did our fences presentations Reflection- I learned different perspectives on each character from my classmates presentations.

sep 24-Prompt: Now that we have finished reading Fences and you are completing your final project, reflect on your overall understanding of the play. Which character, conflict, or theme has stood out to you the most, and why? Explain how your project represents what you learned about the play.

Response- The character/ conflict that has stuck out to me the most was troy. Especially when he denied Cory's scholarship for football. I feel like that was wrong and in the end he was just holding his son back, he didn't even give his son a chance to chase his dreams and future all because baseball didn't work out for him. He played a very traditional role as a ¨man¨ in the story, yet he couldn't stay loyal to his wife Rose and got mad when Cory called him out and hit him. Summary- In class we took a test on Fences as the final assignment for the unit. Reflection- I learned that in the end Cory ends up forgiving Troy and Rose reaches a state of acceptance.

Response- The character/ conflict that has stuck out to me the most was troy. Especially when he denied Cory's scholarship for football. He played a very traditional role as a ¨man¨ in the story, yet he couldn't stay loyal to his wife Rose and got mad when Cory called him out and hit him. Summary- I wasn't in class on tuesday but I was told that the class finished reading the book ¨Fences¨. Reflection- I learned that in the end Cory ends up forgiving Troy and Rose reaches a state of acceptance.

Sep 21-Prompt: At the end of Fences, forgiveness becomes an important part of the characters moving forward. Do you think forgiving someone means you also have to forget what they did? Why or why not? Connect your response to your own experiences or observations.

Response- I think it's good to forgive but never forget. If you forget what they did to you then you're basically setting yourself up for failure in the relationship. If someone does you dirty and you forgive them they're most likely to do it again, and it could end up worse because sometimes their actions affect you more than just you. (It can put you in bad situations or get you in trouble). I know this because its happened to me and other people around me, 9 times out of 10 if you try to forgive and forget it doesn't end well in the long run. Summary- In class we read the book fences. reflection- I learned about Troys infidelity and how Rose responded to him admitting what he did.

Sep 18--Choose one character or scene that appeared differently in the movie than you imagined while reading. What was different, and did the movie change how you understood that character or scene?

Response- I expected Bono to look different. They described him as a little mentally challenged and that he has a metal piece sticking out of his head from the war. In the movie he didnt have the metal in his head and he acted a bit differently. He was a little more calm and collected in the movie, in the book he was more jolly and friendly/ stubborn. Summary- In class we watched two movie scenes from the book fences. Reflection- I learned that in the new section of the book Rose has been the one in charge and shes started deciding what to do with herself since troy had exposed his affair.

sep 17-Do you think one major lie or betrayal can permanently change how you see someone, even if you have known and trusted that person for years? Explain your reasoning and how trust can or cannot be rebuilt.

Response- Yes, betrayal can end relationships and change how you see someone. In cases like husbands having affairs, you lose respect for the husband and usually end up in divorce. Thats what happened with Troy and Rose, after troy confessed Rose lost all respect and trust for him. I feel like someone could be forgiven overtime, but the trust would never be the same.  Summary- In class we read fences and watched movie clips of the part we read. Reflection- I learned that troy cheated on rose with a younger woman and got her pregnant.

sep 15- what do you believe a parent owes their child emotionally? Should love, encouragement, friendship, and support be expected, or are those things separate from a parent’s responsibilities? Explain your perspective.

Response- I think a parent owes their child all of the above. Emotionally unavailable parents usually dont have a good relationship with their kids or they may be distant from each other. Some people dont like showing their emotions but that doesn't mean neglecting your kid emotionally. If you can provide for your kid you can also be loving and supportive. Summary- In class we read the book Fences. Reflection- I learned more about troy and Cory's relationship and Troy's views on parenting. (what he owes to Cory)

Sep 14-Have you ever had to choose between something you wanted to do and something you needed to do? What influenced your decision, and were you satisfied with your choice?

Response- Theres been a lot of times where I didn't want to go to work. Especially on Fridays when Ive had a long day of school, Im really tired but still have to drive to buck head to get there. But i needed to go for my paycheck, I have things I need to pay for like gas and groceries. A month ago I took off one of my Fridays because I didn't feel like working and someone asked me to come in for them. I decided to work because I wanted money and decided it was worth it. Summary- In class we did a group assignment on a character from the book Fences. Reflection- I learned how to use the STEAL method when scanning the book for the answers.

sep 11- Prompt: In Fences, Troy makes it clear that he believes his main responsibility as a father is to provide for Cory, not necessarily to like him or make him happy. Do you think parents have to like their children, or is it enough for them to love, provide for, and take care of them? Explain the difference between loving someone and liking someone. Do you agree or disagree with Troy's view of parenting? Explain your response and make a personal or real-world connection.

Response- Troy is more focused on providing for Cory and making sure he has a roof over his head and getting fed rather than building a relationship/ connection with Cory. I think parents should love their children and provide for them, Love is having a relationship with your child and wanting to make them happy. Troy only sees Cory as a responsibility, I disagree with his parenting. He also doesn't support his son wanting to do sports because football didn't work out for him. Summary- In class we read fences and got into groups. Reflection-  I learned how the story in act two goes.

Sep 10-In Fences, Lyons asks his father, Troy, to lend him money. Do you think adult children should ask their parents to borrow money, or should they be expected to handle their financial problems on their own? Explain your opinion and connect it to your own experiences, observations, or beliefs about family and money.

Response- It depends on the situation of someone or the age, But in my opinion if they are fresh out of high school, around 18 or 20 and they still need to get their life started I can see that happening. But past that absolutely not, I think you should be independent financially. For example in my family both of my brothers graduated high school and they received help from their parents financially when they first started out in college, I think thats okay since they only rely on their parents for college expenses, and my oldest brother started paying for himself. I think it's okay to ask for help, but completely relying on your parents for money past 21 is a no for me. Summary- In class we read fences act one. Reflection- I learned the STEAL method in reading.

Sep 4-Prompt: After watching your classmates present their identity masks, think about how people are often more complex than what we see on the outside. What did the presentations teach you about looking beyond the surface when getting to know someone?

Response- I learned that a lot of guys in my class connect with people through sports. One of the people in my class talked about how he grew up with soccer and how it connected him with his dad a lot and hes met people through the sport. I also learned more about everyone's background about their ethnicity and where they're from. Summary- In class we presented our identity masks. Reflection- I learned that theres a lot of things you couldn't guess about people by just their personality and appearance.

Sep 3-In “Missing Your People,” Tracy Brower explains the importance of belonging. Describe a time when you felt like you truly belonged. What created that feeling?

Response- A time when I truly felt like I belonged was on my friend's birthday. Me and my 4 friends hung out for my friends birthday and we went to her house to celebrate with her family. It made me realize how much they meant to me, I felt safe with them. I see them as my people and my family, we may not be related but they are the only ones where i can be myself around. Summary- In class Mr Rease wasn't here so we did a commonlit.  Reflection- I learned that it's scientifically proven that people need connection with other people.

Sep 1- Prompt: Write about a fear you have overcome.

Response- I used to be really shy and scared of talking to people. I developed this during COVID during quarantine, I quite literally lost my social skills during those two years in the house. It got to the point where my heart used to drop when someone spoke to me, I was kind of giving a weirdo. But since my junior year, I started talking to people more, and I usually talk to random people to troll them. I went from being scared and shy to talking to randoms for the plot. Summary- In class we finished our mask drawings. Reflection- I learned that some of my classmates are bad at drawing.
